There's some neat stuff to do visually with pandas and people should certainly be using it. Also based on the map plot lib kernel, we have seaborn. Seaborn builds on top of matplotlib, like you said, but it really focuses more on doing statistical analysis of your data. So I use it a lot for histograms and box plots, but where seaborn is really, really powerful is the ability to do facet plotting or small multiples.
