Do You Really Need a VPN?
Don't pay for a VPN built your own. You're not getting anything from that because the hosting provider has exactly zero legal limits on what they can do to your traffic. There's no anonymity there like zero, you know, the host knows who you are. So don't do it. The other thing is you don't even have any crowding effects. It doesn't exist. If if your threat model includes hiding your IP address, then both a VPN and Tor are better than not having that. Well, a good provider is always better than running it yourself. Yeah.
