The New York Times reported in late 2021 that many for-profit businesses have been able to overcome staffing difficulties during the nationwide labor shortage because they can offer higher wages. Nonprofits, on the other hand, can't. Carrie Miranda, executive director of Looking Upwards, a nonprofit in Rhode Island: We've lost our ability to become competitive. Some employees, like Stephanie Melina, says she would have stayed at her nonprofit job if they would have just given her a $2 an hour raise so she could actually make a living wage.
