The goblin emperor by catherine addison is a great place to start if you're interested in fantasy. The main character, maya, is this enormously sympathetic figure. He's floundering at first, but you watch him find his way and you watch him figure things out. And on top of that, it's also just a gorgeously built world with sort of kind of high phantasy elements.
