How to Diagnosis Depression and Substance Use Disorders

For a well adult, generally the rule is you want to order tests with a specific diagnosis in mind. Some of the most common substances that cause depressive symptoms are alcohol as well as cocaine or stimulant withdrawal. Antiviral therapies such as interferom, used mainly for Hep C, and atripla, used for HIV, cortical steroids, and alpha-2 adrenergic agonists such as Klonodine and methyldopa have all been shown to cause depressive symptoms. And although classically thought-to, recent literature suggests that oral contraceptives and beta blockers are not related to depressive symptoms.
