The byzantine empire was about to collapse. Many lands and cities of anatalia had fallen, and refugees flooded westwards. A dramatic intervention was needed to save the empire. It came in the form of alexios comenenus, whose grandfather had briefly been the byzantine emperor shortly after the great schism in the ten fifties. Alexios usurped the throne in ten 81 in a desperate attempt to rescue the situation in the byzantines. The pope at the time was pope urban the second, a frenchman on the cusp of immortality. He appealed to these followers of the latin church to raise an army to defend and reclaim christian churches
