Small talk is evolved to find out who the other person is and notably what social group are they part of. Now you don't need to use small talk to brag or to signal how awesome you are. Small talk is really used as a signaling mechanism, as an information discovery mechanism for women in modern society. If you cannot even engage in small talk, that is a major signal of bad, bad things like you're a bad person.
