There's a book by a French guy I'm forgetting his name but it's called did the Greeks believe their myths and it's a rhetorical question because the argument is that they didn't. And so we modern look at them and we say oh you know they did all these sacrifices and they they bow down to Zeus but if you would actually talk to them maybe they tell you directly or maybe you just find out indirectly they were kind of as cynical as us. They went through the motions and they showed up and like maybe they said the prayers but fundamentally like it didn't act It was more just like what we might say in our context they were orthopracts but not orthodox.
