There's nothing like inherently wrong with extrinsic motivation, but there are some consequences to living our lives largely motivated by external factors rather than internal ones. One of the big ones is the consequences it can have for our satisfaction. We also are profoundly social primates. Of course, we want approval. And then the feeling of pursuing and achieving something that we're extrinsically motivated toward rather than intrinsically motivated toward.
