How Much Self Discovery Do You Have When Writing Novels?

I think what surprises me is sometimes the the empathy you can have, or howt ility you have to put yourself in situations. I i imagined my books wold be quite snarky and cruel and a bit world weary and jaded. And actually turns out that's not who i am when when i write novels. That's not where my mind goes to.
