King John, John VI, died in 1826. He had left his eldest son Pedro as a king or emperor of Brazil. Neither Portugal nor Brazil want to be united. They don't want to have the same monarch. So Pedro is going to abdicate; he's going to stay in Brazil. And then you had a royal succession crisis to mess everything up.
