The exploitation of black women's reproductive labor was essential to the perpetuation of the slavery system, you say. "It was in the economic interest of enslavers to ensure that black women continue to have babies," she says. But after slavery ends, what you then see is the same women pressure to have fewer children because these children now seem as a burden rather than a source of potential profit.
