Freud's Idea of the Short Session
The trajectory is toward drive and then it's toward the interminable analysis. He thinks, I mean, we might qualify that a little bit at the end, but it's interesting how he gets to that point because the beginning of the essay is so consumed with analytic practice. So Freud's, Freud says, how do you shorten an analysis, right? And Lacan thought of the short session, not as shortening the length ofanalysis, but the length of the analytic session itself. But Freud's idea is no, wait, I don't want this person coming to me for six months. I want to help them get it over with.
