Emily Dickinson became known as the myth of Amherst. Her in-person circle shrank significantly after her friend Carlo died in 1866. She was born in the wrong time, and she rebelled against so much beholdenness to everyone's expectations. Emily is the Caged Bird who clipped her own wings and tied her own feet; nevertheless, she found a way to sing.
