The Evolution of Anthropomorphism
We tend to anthropomorphize things more when we want to make sense of them. To the extent that a stimulus in the environment elicits the concept human, we're going to humanize it. When we feel that social connection with humans is lacking, we might try to find that in other sources by humanizing non-human entities such as technology.
