Introduction
On April 20, 2010, a drilling rig called Deepwater Horizon was operating around 41 miles off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. Gaseous hydrocarbons had somehow gone into the well, expanding and increasing the pressure in the pipe until they were able to get into the rig. Something, heat from the equipment or maybe a spark, ignited them. The crew prepared to move Deepwater Horizon away from the well so that a smaller rig could connect there instead.
