The Freedom of the First Principle

Plotinus devoted an ambitious treatise to the freedom of the first principle. He asks what it means for something to be, as the Stoics like to put it, up to us. For him, freedom is simply the power to do what one wishes without hindrance or compulsion exercised by anything else. We can only strive towards the same kind of untrammeled freedom of action above all by doing philosophy.
