Productivity has been growing at about 0.4% a year between 2008 and 2019. The last period in which productivity growth was as low as that, a peacetime period, would be the 1820s. One of the prime suspects is low investment. But public investment certainly has an important part to play. And that comes through things like the public sector investing in infrastructure.
