After World War II, Poland became a Soviet satellite state like East Germany. It was part of what we called the Eastern Bloc, which is a group of communist countries around the world. The most powerful Communist Party pulled most of the strings, particularly in the energy sector. But that all started to change in the 1980s when protests against communist rule rocked the country.
