Complexity Science Is So Enriching Because It Justifies Folkloric Beliefs

I think the simplest instance of complexity thinking is to be probabilistic. But you can go beyond that and start thinking about connections and systems of dependence over long time scales. For every metaphor you have, there is a rigorous principle that corresponds to it. I got my first exposure to what I would now call complexity science back in 1997 when I read John Hollins' adaptation in natural and artificial systems.
