What's Butterfield's Story?
One of the great narratives of English history is regarded and somewhat contemptuously regarded as weak history. The way the narrative is constructed is we're going towards this great, this great destination. And Butterfield comes in, in the 1930s, and he basically says that having got rid of demolished the wig history and that sort of glorious triumph of, you know, English civilization. What we've done is in his own words: "We are all of us exultant and unrepentant wigs"
