The Vaunted Work Ethic
In the 1960s, in the U.S., Charles Murray says it was easier to get along without a job. Once these highly functional sources of status are removed, the vaunted work ethic becomes vulnerable. The welfare system is actually crowding out the rewards of employment at the bottom end of the scale. It's just really impossible to go back.
