The Difference Between a Utilitarian and a Volunteer List
I am not a utilitarian I don't I don't believe in it as an ethical theory, but a main point that we make early in the book is that there are many different value theories and there is no objective criteria for for arguing between them. There's no we should not expect that with enough argument we could all arrive at a conclusion that any one ethical theory is right. So what we're trying to argue for is that this notion of volunteerism is sufficiently general and neutral that we want to make arguments that are appealing to people coming from different value theories.
