Daphne Abricks is professor of African American Studies at Yale University. She can't think of another pop song by any vocalist who walked us through the various intimate domestic details of everyday life. Rima Barry wrote a song called Aretha about a little girl who walks to school and doesn't have anyone to talk to because her mother has a mental illness. It's about feeling encouraged and inspired by music and how music can be a friend, can be a companion, can save you basically.
