Mediaeval europeans tended to look towards ancient greek and roman authors as being the real sources of authority on the natural world. The big name for mediaeval people is the greek philosopher aristotle, who writes this kind of collection of treatises on animals. For example he verified how many cartloads of meat a dead whale accounted for by seeing it chopped up into pieces. He also dissected moles to verify his claims that they had no eyes under the black eye where liquid should be.
