Luther objects to the tentative tone adopted by erasmus. None of the suggestions made by the great humanist are innovative. But worse still is erasmuss unwillingness to endorse a solution. Luther astutely detects here a tendency towards scepticism espoused by some ancient philosophers like, although he doesn't mention his name, cicero. Take away assertions, says luther, and you take away christianity. It's worth emphasizing that luther appeals primarily to scripture and not rational argument.
