Is There a Complexity in Your Process?
The question of which explanatory variables you believe in is I think the hardest problem in empirical finance. It's almost impossible to be able to identify, ex post, which explanatory variables are true and which spurious. The vast majority of investors as they're making decisions incorporate the trajectory of past returns into their decision making. For some who are wired as more contrarian, it feels good to buy something that has gone down a lot.
