The Importance of the Will of the Voters
If we want Trump to be held accountable, it will rely on the voters first holding him politically accountable. In an odd sort of way, I think the fact that he would pardon himself and a bunch of other people means that if he did win, having that on his platform, he would have a stronger argument to make about being able to pardon himself. The reason that the president can't be sidelined because one prosecutor says so is precisely because the president is this national figure elected by the entire country.
