We have talked in the past about tools for Product Analytics, but we have not yet talked about why analytics are so important for the product manager. It might seem obvious, but it is still a concept that needs more clarification.
For exactly that reason, 10 years ago Ben Yoskovitz and Alistair Croll wrote the book “Lean Analytics: Use Data to Build a Better Startup Faster” (O'Reilly), and it is still relevant today, not only to startups entrepreneurs, but to product people.
In this episode, Moshe and Matt met with Ben Yoskovitz to hear about the different ways Product Managers use analytics, and what we can learn from Lean Analytics.
In the episode we talked about:
- Taking the theory of Lean Startup to a more actionable place, based on analytics and data
- Identifying the metrics that matter to you - what to track and what to focus on based on the business you are in and the stage you are at
- What makes a good metric? How do I know a number is a good one to look at?
- What has changed since writing the book?
- What product managers should learn and focus on?
- Balancing qualitative and quantitative data and analytics
- And much more!
