Robin Dunbar is a current, eminent evolutionary psychologist at Oxford. He wrote a book about how small talk among humans is essentially the human form of primate grooming. We seek strokes and if we can't do it through sort of authentic interpersonal, honest interactions, people will get caught up in these games to fulfill this need.
