There are different stages of what a CEO and a board go through in a down economy or when the economy, when your company is no longer growing. What you want to say at a layoff is you want it to be short and violent. I don't think there's an elegant way to fire people. You can try and be empathetic about it. But at the end of the day, firing people, especially when you have to do it in mass, is very difficult. It does help the stock. Like they, in my opinion, okay, short term stock movements, that's an indication that the market sees that these companies have gotten too fat.
