Slemen's Excavation of Mycenae
Slemen began digging near what's known as the lion's gate, which was originally found and restored by an earlier archaeologist. Within this circle he discovered five graves that contained a total of 19 bodies - nine men, eight women, and two children. Slemen would go on to continue his work at Mycenae and other areas in Greece. He also planned to dig at Knoosos in Crete, but died in 1890 before he could secure permission to explore there.
