But if you were to visit Alexandria and say the second century BC, you'd see a culture deeply engaged in Homeric scholarship. And I sometimes wonder what would have happened had poetic scholarship like that won out over the philosophers,. So how is it significant for an intellectual tradition to have poetry at its foundation? He says there's something about the tradition of philosophical critique that's led us to where we are today.
