If you are in the S&P 500 for a thousand dollars since 1970 maybe you'll have 300,000 by now but if you were out of the market on the five best days you'd be down like 35% or so it's literally that much. The consumer the average trader is getting the best deal they've gotten ever with electronic trading better software and hardware enabled computers to match buy and sell orders for stocks lowered bid asks may pricing a bit more efficient.
