Ukraine has been part of russia for centuries. It's an enormously strategic area because it's on the black sea. sanctions are a less severe stick to use against somebody than just sending in, you know, bombing raids and troops and infantry. The people wholl end up suffering the most will be the ordinary, ie, working people of russia.
