In the 80s and 90s, Southern Baptist figures were very close with the Republican Party. Russell Moore was the most prominent example of this crew of people. And then you had a generation come up after them who critiqued the closeness of leaders with political parties. So these guys were often the products of the Bible Belt. Maybe they saw issues or shortcomings there in the Christianity that they grew up in. They wanted to just throw all of it out.
