Herod and Antiochus - A History of the Roman Empire

James jordan argues that this figure is herod the great, and likely the dynasty that followed him. The king also seems to be unfaithful to a covenant that he is under in some way. Herod later appointed his 17 year old brother in law as high priest. In verse 40, one reference is made to his abortive expedition against edom, moab and ammon. Perhaps it's a reference to children. It might also refer to the messiah as the desire of women.
