Rudolf Hess was sentenced to prison at the Nuremberg trials following World War II. He remained in Spandau for 21 years until his death in 1987. The US prison commandant, Lieutenant Colonel Eugene Byrd, a profited Hess and later wrote a book about him called The Loneliest Man in the World.
