The Taliban - What's the Root of Their Hold on Power?
The Taliban are geographically isolated, ethnically pastune in a multi-ethnic society. They have very strong support and control in their rural areas but it's a fairly thin base. There's just no credible alternative to them at the moment - people are quite afraid of the Taliban. The Taliban provided a measure of protection against abuses committed by warlords.
