Netflix's $1 Million Contest
In 2006, Netflix had a $1 million contest. They told customers to come up with a recommendation algorithm that could predict 10% better than Netflix how those subscribers would rate movies. One Ohio woman said that the information collected could be used to out her as a closeted lesbian. This isn't just wrong or violating Netflix's own policy either, but the law itself. The VPPA was passed after a video rental data leak in the 1980s.
