The hills of southern west virginia were transformed by outside financial interests, from a society of self sufficient yeoman farmers into an economic colony wholly owned by far away corporations. The power of the operators depended on their ability to negotiate as a monolith with miners who could only negotiate as individuals. Every individual miner is immediately replaceable. You'd be the best coal miner in the whole wide world, and they could replace you with a guy who's just learning the job. And the whole operation is not going to be effected one %.
