Ivan Illich was a great kind of subversive Catholic thinker who is sort of famous I suppose, for his multi-pronged critique of institutions. One of the arguments he makes is that previously, the differences between men and women played out in terms of their roles and even in terms of tool use,. such that sexual difference wasn't even a topic of conversation.
