The SA is very important to the ethos and the self-conception of the Nazi party. As soon as their boots hit the streets, they set about causing a right scene. Hitler feels the only way to get through to some people is to put a fist through their face. The SA fought with knuckle dusters, truncheons, beer glasses, daggers, and pistols. It can be very, very difficult to determine from the historical record where that SA men had an eager and deep ideological conviction about Nazis. What they're doing reflects more masculine thrills of violence and comradeship.
