The Origins of Sound Makers in the Early Oceans
It is possible that ancient groups of living fish like polipterus or sturgeon, made rumbling or thumping sound as far back as 300 and forty million years ago. Other communicative sound makers in the early oceans may have been spiny lobsters - still common in warm oceans to day. Spiny lobsters rub the base of their antennae along track near the eyes, eliciting a yelp that can travel more than a kilometer under water. The family tree of spiny lobster split from other crustaceans 220 million years ago,. although the timing of the appearance of anternal squealers is unknown.
