George's Plan to Move Confederates Out of DC
General Little Mac's plan to get in between the Confederates and their capital is foiled. Confederate General Joseph Johnston falls back to defensive lines on the west banks of the Rappahannock. President Lincoln asks Little Mac to resign as General-in-Chief, but he can stay on as General of the Army of the Potomac. On March 17, 1862, George finally puts his army of now over 100,000 men on more than 400 ships and they sailed down the potomac.
