In every aspect of life, he called himself the son king because he was the center of the world that was France. French society really had no moving power, no power of motion independent of him. The greatest public subsidizers of art in history have been those with the greatest political claims. There's a reason the state likes to associate this magical thing that is art with it. It lends an aura to the state.
