In 3500 BC there was the first concept of a cosmic order and the notion that the universe must tell man how to live. In traditional society myth serves four basic functions, he says. The first function is alerting and awakening in the individual a sense of awe before the mystery dimension of being. He adds: "The social order we've assigned to our cosmological sphere has been taken away"
