There's something called cognitive restructuring, which is working at the level of automatic thoughts. It involves noticing your own automatic thoughts and asking yourself if they are fact or opinion. And then associated with that, there are all these lovely thinking traps that therapists have noticed: jumping to conclusions, double standards,. Fortune telling - where I think I know what's going to happen, but actually I'm fortune telling. Overgeneralizing -- some things happened in the past, so I assume it's always going to happen in the future. The homework might be to notice them doing it; one of my favorite tools is called Stop.
