The PhD itself takes a lot of time and may not be as valuable to yourself in terms of like income compared to having a job. I see more and more work being done affiliated with companies. So I assume this is where it will go. Like most PhDs will be people doing a PhD for meta, for example, and things like that. But I don't know what will happen with the PhD.
