Your best theories are going to be creative guesses, not simple extrapolations. Good explanations rely on creativity. It's very rare in science to have more than one viable theory. In physics, we mentioned newtonian theory of gravity and there was generalrelativity. That's one of the cations where you actually have these two competing theories.
